Rarely do we think of how consumer dollars—specifically, gay dollars—have a positive affect on the gay community and the economy at large.
If that weren’t true, there would not be such an attempt at anti-gay proponents to single out gays and gay supporters where money is concerned.
In an article by Carlos Santoscoy, September 8, 2008, on the web site OnTop Magazine
(www.ontopmag.com), Fred Karger, Campaign Manager of Californians Against Hate, makes the observation that certain people “are pouring in money into California to eliminate our freedom to marry [and] are willing to spend tens of millions of dollars to do just that.”
However, according to Steve Ralls, director of communications for Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), “more and more business leaders are adopting policies, and creating work places, that put a welcome mat out for the LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] community.”
Just how important is gay money? Enough that a book has been written about it. Gay Money, [1997, Per Larson], states on it’s cover: “Your personal guide to same-sex strategies for financial security, strength and success.” On Mr. Larson’s official web site, the book is touted as this: “Your guide to turning financial reality into your personal dreams. Gay Money is a long-awaited asset for your own gay balance sheet.” (www.gaymoney.com)
Another excellent web site is www.QueerCents.com, the motto being, “We’re Here, We’re Queer, and We’re Not Going Shopping Without Coupons.” There’s a weekly series called “In Search Of Gay Money.” It is a must-read if you are serious about seeking out sound advice on how to spend, save, or otherwise utilize wisely your money as a GLBT person.
So, you can see just how important and significant your gay money is. For more information, simply use your search engine for “gay money”. There’s more there than you can imagine. And while your searching for ways to best use your gay dollars, don’t forget to start by taking care of yourself.
